blogs?

so I removed the links from the blogs that haven't updated in over a year. all those guys were friends from chiptalk, and if they start blogging again I'll definitely relink them. but it seemed silly to have links that are being updated in case people clicked on them and got no where.

so now my blog roll is kind of empty. if you have a blog that you would like me to link up reply and I'll take a look. and might add it. and let me know if you decide to link to mine. also I'll keep my eyes out for poker blogs that might be interesting to link up to. I'm also thinking about becoming an affiliate for bluefirepoker since I recently became a member. so I might throw some bluefire adds on my page and some links to Phil Galfond and Dr Giggy's blogs.

booked a nice 1.5k session that had a ton of variance. I think I played well and ran pretty good. might play some PLO before I go to bed.

running really good this month

all in EV is through the roof this month. What can I say the poker gods have blessed me. All credit to the poker gods. other than that not much happening this weekend. Had a long friday night session, booked a small (1k) win. then on no sleep went wedding dress shopping with katy because one of her friends couldn't make it. I'll keep the details to a minimum, but I was definitely the only human in either store we went to with a penis (as far as I could tell) and at one point the owner of the store told me I'd have to wait outside until another customer left because they might feel uncomfortable in trying on dresses in front of me. Note that this woman would be fully clothed and showing off nothing more than what she would be at her wedding, but having another male in the store paying no attention to them might bother them. So I went and sat in the car and played Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego on my phone. That was nice.

Duke had a great win on saturday night, and I was really proud of how the guys played. Just a fantastic job breaking the press and our defense was outstanding. I know people are bagging on this team because they have a couple of bad losses, but I'm telling you, you don't want to play us come tourney time. We are not going to get outrebounded, and we have lots of fouls to give. We have a big physical team that plays well in the rough and slowed down half court games that typically happen in the NCAAs. We've had a lot of teams in the past 6-7 years that had as much or more talent than this team, but I think few of them with the exception of 2004 had a better chance of going deep in the tourney. And that's including 2006 when we were clearly the best team in the country but lacked depth and size. We'll see if my predictions play out, but if the low public confidence continues for the devils I really like our chances in the tourney.

football games were good yesterday. I didn't want the jets to win although I didn't really want the colts either, but I guess I'm glad the colts pulled it out. In the second game I just wanted anyone other than favre in the super bowl so I wouldn't have to endure 5 million favre stories on tv and the web over the next 2 weeks. I'm also rooting for the saints because it's easy to root for new orleans, and I'd rather not see the colts win. either way I think it's going to be a shoot out of a super bowl and that should be fun.

last update is that a buddy is going to do open mic standup on thursday night and he's been pressuring me to go up as well. I've written a page or so of material but I don't really think any of it is that funny and I'm really unsure about presentation, setups, and segues. And even though most of the people that perform are pretty bad I'm not the kind of person to just go up and bomb just to say I did it. Not that I'm scared to put myself out there, just that I'd like to not suck when I do. so I'll probably give it a go some time in the future, but I don't see it happening on thursday.

grandfather still in hospital though showing some improvement. Hopefully he'll be able to head back to the assisted living apt with my grandmother soon.

that's it from here. rainy day in boston and I actually went to sleep at a semi-reasonable hour the last few nights so I was up in the morning. Just finished brunch and figure I'm going to shower and work out then start an afternoon session. I figure the tables will be brutal on monday afternoon, but that'll give me a chance to pwn some regs.

friday night is poker night

just played a session of absolutely horrendous poker. I couldn't hand read, I tilted, I made bad plays, it was just all around stupid. I missed two chances to make huge river bluffs that probably would have won me some stacks too, because I got timid after things started so bad.

despite all of that the poker gods blessed me with some run good and I managed to only lose $400 even though I was down $4k at one point. so all praise be to the poker gods.

plan for the rest of the late night? workout, eat a snack, and play more poker. friday night games are too good to pass up, and if I'm still feeling the grind I've got to hit the tables.

pic of the day: from a snowy day on the chapel quad at my alma mater. hopefully the pic will bring some good luck to the devils and we can get a big road win at clemson tomorrow. go devils.

updates

had a fun time in vegas last weekend. watched some football, ate some good food, hung out with a group of awesome folks, and didn't lose much gambling (less than $200) so all good.

been grinding hard so far this week (10k hands in two days) and it's paid off to the tune of a couple of nice cashes. I've also been goofing around playing rush poker on ftp. the game itself is tons of fun and lets me play a stress free laggy style. I get to try and own people which is always fun. but the counter is that i think it's actually bad for the game long run. It is taking the ability to get reads (via notes huds etc) out of the equation and also forcing the games to play at lower stakes and extremely fast. So it is taking some weapons out of good players hands while raking the games at 4x the rate. I mean the rake in these games is just astounding. the upside is that it hurts the bottom line of bumhunters (guys who seak out large losing players and will only play with them) who are the riviled scum of the poker world. these guys are hated by pros and amateurs alike and the rush games force them to play with whomever comes to their tables.

so my hope is that if ftp keeps pushing rush tables that they at least bring them to midstakes and consider lowering the rake. what i'd actually like to see is rush PLO because I've been messing around in that game and that would be a way to quickly get in a bunch of hands and get a feel for the game.

while I may not be totally sold on rush poker, I am totally sold on ftp increasing the minimum buy-in for their standard tables. It has virtually eliminated the shortstacker problem and has made the games immeasurably more fun. It probably saved some customers like me who were seriously considering moving most of their play to stars, whereas now I'll likely split time between the sites.

not a ton of other stuff going on. my grandpa has been in and out of the hospital and is back in today and things aren't looking good. I'm hoping that he is able to pull out of it, though I know with as many health problems as he has the clock is ticking. I'm really concerned for what is going to happen to my grandma if and when his time comes since she has pretty bad alzheimers and really struggles without him around. hopefully he'll pull out of it, and maybe if he can make it to spring the weather will warm up and kind of revive him a little.

here's a pic. I need to take some new ones for 2010, just haven't really been messing with my camera much.

another 2k hands now only $800 down

but my HUD is all messed up so I can't play for the next few hours unless I want to play without it. so we'll see how much more I get in today.

duke playing a fantastic second half right now. I'd love to see us play this way every night, especially on the road when we get socked in the mouth a little in the first half.

3k hands played $3k down LOL

mostly run bad but some play bad too. here is a hand from the session that was fun though:

haven't been grinding.

since friday night when I booked a nice 6.6k win after 5-6 hours of grinding I've really lost my motivation. Don't know why but I just haven't felt like playing at all over the past few days. I even considered playing some PLO since I've been meaning to put in some work to learn that game beyond a rudimentary level, but the motivation just wasn't coming.

so I'm going to try and grind hard for the next three days before I go to vegas for the weekend. My goal is going to be 25k hands by friday morning. That's a lot, but it's definitely doable.

I'll update progress if it's interesting.

what a crappy day yesterday

duke was dissappointing. our half court offense needs a lot of work and we need more of the plumlees and less thomas who was almost a non-factor yesterday. But in the end a decent shooting game would have won it for us, and we really shot bad from both the 3pt line and the FT line.

the bengals were, well the bengals. Their offense was it's typical anemic self, and the defense just allowed too many big plays. As a bengals fan I was really excited when the game started because the crowd was really fired up and you could tell it was infectious to the players. I really did not think we were a favorite to win the game but with that atmosphere and with the players going that hard I liked our chances. But I think (and this pains me) that the Jets were a better football team and the game showed that.

The final game of the day I had no stake in but it was crappy and I don't like the cowboys, so that sucked too.

and now the patriots are down 24-0 in the first qt and it is going to take a miracle for them to even make this a game. I mean this is really just painful.

running super hot

yeah basically I'm getting crazy lucky every session and running unbelievably hot. all praise be to the poker gods. sure feels good to start of the year this way. considering starting to take play 10/20 NL when the games are decent as I'm definitely rolled for it. Also playing on starting to play some omaha now that it has been incorporated into PT3. gotta learn to play the game of the degens right?

big day of sports coming up. big day for the devils, and then I'm hoping the bengals can pull one out. Haven't seen my team win a playoff game in 2 decades so it would be nice to see the second round sometime.

pic o the day

had some good food and wine earlier at katy's office holiday party. had easily half a dozen people tell us how cute we are. I guess being a dude I should find that kind of lame, but honestly I think it's kind of nice that people can see that we have a pretty special relationship. prolly too much emo stuff there. moving on...

missed most of the football game but it looked like the first half was kind of lame anyway. really didn't want to see saban win as I think he's an example of everything that is wrong with college athletics today. but whatever.

back to blogging with new ideas

I think I'm going to try and blog some more in 2010. but less poker and more other stuff. I'll gladly post about poker if someone asks or if something truly exciting happens, but for the most part I don't feel like what I'm saying is all that interesting.

however the point of the blog was to keep a record of things that were happening in my life so that I could reflect on them and have written memories of not only events but my outlook in the past. I'm always surprised by the growth and change that happens to myself over time, and it's nice to have a way of getting an honest look at ones past self assessment.

in that vein I've got two goals for this blog this year. The first goal is that I'm going to try and post several neat pictures that I have taken with my camera each week (every day if I get on a roll). I think it will be a great way for me to get more familiar with the camera and to encourage me to take more pictures which I always enjoy. The second goal is to try and tell more interesting stories that happen to me mostly due to my association with some hilarious characters (ie my friends). This will be a much more challenging goal as I consider my prose to be boring and uninteresting. I often start to write things and then find myself just scrapping or deleting them because I feel there is no value added in my words. But maybe practice will improve this, and if nothing else I think it's a good exercise to keep my mind sharp.

that's all for now.
